1,169,291. Phenols. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Aug., 1968 [14 Aug., 1967], No. 37319/67. Heading C2C. A process in which an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group is removed from a substituted phenol comprises contacting a phenol which is substituted by at least one alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group having from 2-12 carbon atoms with an aluminium salt of a carboxylic acid. The aluminium salt is preferably a salt of a carboxylic acid having 2 to 25 carbon atoms. Using this process p-cresol is prepared from 4-methyl-2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol in Example I, and m-cresol, 3-methyl-4-tort.-butyl phenol, and 3-methyl-6-tort.-butyl phenol are produced from 3-methyl-4,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol in Example II.
