Resorcinol is prepared by fusion of mbenzenedisulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof with and alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of an alkali metal aromatic monosulphonate or an alkali metal salt of an aromatic monohydroxy compound, the sulphonate and hydroxy groups in these compounds being directly attached to the aromatic nuclei.
