1,168,375. Making composite metal plates. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE A.G. 11 April, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17492/68. Heading B3A. A method of making thick clad metal plates by hot rolling a sandwich composed of outer layers of base material and inner layers of cladding material, a stop weld being introduced between surfaces which are not to be bonded, is characterized by rolling the sandwich with a reduction of less than 66<SP>2</SP>/ 3 % to a thickness which is greater than the sum of the desired final thicknesses of the individual composite plates, and rolling each plate separately to the desired final thickness. The sandwich comprises two base-plates of carbon steel 402 mm. thick and two 38 mm. chromium nickel steel plates, the latter being separated by a layer of zirconium oxide. The sandwich is sealed by welding around its circumference and evacuated. The sandwich is then heated and rolled from a thickness of 880 mm. to 440 mm. to bond the cladding to the base. The top and bottom composite plates are separated and each rolled to a final thickness of 120 mm.
