Abstract

1,167,589. Wells. J. R. DOHERTY. 16 Oct., 1967, No. 47093/67. Heading E1F. A set of slips to be placed between a pipe and a bowl at the top of a well casing comprises segments hinged together (e.g. by lugs 46, 48 and pins 34), each segment having a removable pipe engaging liner 12 with a friction face, and a further friction device such as a toothed cam 60, so that when the pipe slips, the cam is rotated and urges the upper end of the segment radially outwardly so as to pre-, the lower face of the liner harder against the pipe. The liner may be retained by lips 15, 22 on the segment, or may have a key slidable downwardly into a slot in the segment, the cam subsequently being installed on pin 62 and preventing the liner from rising. The cam aperture 66 may be larger than pin 62, to provide some lost motion normally taken up by a spring which presses the cam to engage the pipe.
