Abstract
1,167,343. Electric heating tapes. ISOPAD Ltd. 27 Feb., 1967 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 8425/66. Heading H5H. An electric surface heater comprises a flexible heating element 2 whose parallel emergent free ends pass through a body 3 of plastics material which is suitably moulded to fit tightly in a flame-proof gland 4. As shown, the parallel legs 2 of the heating element are contained in twin passages in a flexible plastics, e.g. P.V.C., F.E.P., P.T.F.E. or silicon rubber, tape 1. The body 3 is made of the same material as the tape and is heat shrunk on to the tape, and while still soft is inserted into the gland 4 so that it conforms to the bore in the gland. In an alternative arrangement the emergent ends of the heating element 2 are constituted by cold tails which are carried in twin bores of a plastics sheath. In this embodiment the body 3 is shrunk around the sheath for the cold tails and is moulded to the shape of gland 4 by insertion therein. The emergent cold tails are connected to the ends of the heating element by metal crimps and the joints are protected by a heat shrunk plastics sleeve. The inner ends of the heating element may be connected by a thermostat.
