Abstract
1,167,214. Air heating and cooling apparatus. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. 31 May, 1967 [1 June, 1966; 2 Sept., 1966], No. 25044/67. Heading F4V. In air conditioning apparatus in which air is passed through a bed of particulate material of high thermal capacity, which may be crushed basalt, and heating and/or cooling means for the air is provided the particulate material is supported in a basket having an air-permeable floor. The embodiment shown in Fig. 5 comprises two enclosures 16, 17 each containing a bed 35, 40 the air from the room being exhausted through one bed while atmospheric air is supplied to the room via the other bed, this arrangement being reversed in a four-minute cycle. The cooling means comprises a further bed 33 (or 34) which is sprayed with water from jets 29 whereby the air passing from the room to atmosphere is evaporatively cooled and thereby cools the bed 35 (or 40) which in turn cools the incoming air to the room during the next cycle. The sprays may be thermostatically controlled to conserve water. A valve 39 controls the direction of air during the cycles. A burner 51 for natural gas is provided for winter heating. An air inlet 49 permits the introduction of makeup air from the atmosphere. Fans 47, 48 ensure circulation of the air. In another embodiment the apparatus is enclosed in a rectangular metal casing with air inlet and outlet connections at diagonally opposite corners and the casing is divided internally by a longitudinal vertical bulkhead including valves controlling the cycle. A timing device and electric motor operate the valve. This embodiment is suitable for installation as a "package-unit."
