Abstract

In a photo-electric line follower the photoelectric device has a small field of view which remains coincident with a scanning spot of light projected on to the substrate: the scanning path may be circular or a straight line. In Fig.3 light from a lamp 21 after passing through aperture 23 is brought into a parallel beam by lens 27 for passing through a Dove prism 28 and then focusing by lens 32 to form a spot upon the substrate 33. By rotating the Dove prism about an axis 37 offset from the axis of the condenser lens 24 and aperture 23, the light-spot makes a circular sweep over the substrate. Light reflected off the substrate returns via the Dove prism to be deflected by a Swan block - two prisms, one of which is half silvered at their interface 26 - on to the photo-electric device 36 which may be a phototransistor. In other arrangements the reflected light is deflected by a half-silvered mirror Fig. 2 (not shown) or an apertured mirror Fig. 1 (not shown).
