Abstract

1,166,994. Porous coating. PORVAIR Ltd. 14 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 43858/65. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Composite sheet material comprising a sheet of a thermoplastic synthetic polymeric plastics surface working material formed directly on and in adherence with the surface of a permanent support which consists of a fibrous material impregnated with an elastomeric synthetic plastics base working material, which is a polymer that is soluble in the common solvents for the surface working material, is prepared by forming a homogeneous mixture comprising a solid particulate removable filter and the surface working material by homogeneously dispersing the filter in the working material when the latter is in a plastic or liquid state and then removing any solvent used by evaporation, melt coating the homogeneous mixture as a continuous sheet on the permanent support by means of a melt roll coating machine which has a pair of horizontally disposed coacting rolls rotating in different directions at different peripheral speeds, the mixture being supplied to the nip of this pair of rolls, the rolls being heated to temperatures such as to render the surface working material plastic and the temperature and the difference in speed of rotation being such as to cause the mixture to form a continuous homogeneous sheet on the surface of the faster one of the rolls (the transfer roll), the sheet being transferred to the permanent support which passes between the transfer roll and a support roll which bears against the transfer roll and rotates in the opposite direction to the transfer roll, and exposing the sheet to a leaching agent so as to remove the filler but not to adversely affect the surface working material, the nature of the filler, the weight ratio of filler to surface working material and the conditions during the melt coating being selected to ensure that a continuous sheet of the mixture is formed and that the structure of the sheet is such as to enable the filler to be removed to form a porous sheet of surface working material. The permanent support may be formed by impregnating with the base working material a felt formed by mechanically entangling a web of staple fibres, the amount of impregnant used being such that the base zone remains appreciably vapour-permeable. Polyvinyl chloride and polyurethanes are preferably used as the surface working material and suitable fillers are water-soluble inorganic salts, such as sodium chloride. The resulting sheet material may be used in the footwear, clothing and upholstery fields.
