1,166,950. Stabilising olefin polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967; 2 Oct., 1967], Nos. 972/67 and 44778/67. Heading C3P. Solid polymers of branched-chain mono-α- olefins containing at least 5 carbon atoms are stabilized by incorporating therein 0.0001 to 1 weight per cent of a phenol of formula wherein A is in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1-12 alkyl or C 5-7 cycloalkyl, K<SP>3</SP> is A or a C 1-12 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl or C 5-7 cycloalkyl group and R<SP>4</SP> is H or R<SP>3</SP>, or alternatively R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring. Specified polymers are of 3-methyl pentene-1, 3-methyl butene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1, 4,4-dimethyl pentene-1, 3-methyl hexene-1, 4-methyl hexene- 1, 5-methyl hexene-1 and 5,5-dimethylhexene-1, optionally with ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentane-1, hexene-1 or decene- 1 - Conventional additives, e.g. lubricants such as zinc and calcium stearates, and other antioxidants such as phenols, dialkyl thiodipropionates, metal dialkyl dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates, dialkyl thioethers, organic phosphites and phosphonates, may also be present. Examples describe the stabilizing of 4-methyl pentene-1/ndecene-1 copolymers with (1) tris-(3,5-di-t.- butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-amine, 1,4-bis-(3,5-dit.-butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) - piperazine, N,N - di - (#- hydroxyethyl) - 3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzylamine and N,N - di - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) - ethanolamine together with commercial antioxidants; (3) N,N - di - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl)-ethanolamine together with (2) dilauryl thiodipropionate and a commercial antioxidant; and (4) N,N-bis-(3,5-di-t.-butyl-4- hydroxybenzyl)-methylamine or N,N-bis-(di-t.- butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-n-butylamine.
