Abstract

1341443 Stabilizer for polyolefins ICI AMERICA Inc 25 June 1971 [25 June 1970] 29903/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Polyolefins are stabilized by the addition as stabilizer of 3,3-methylene-bis-(5-tert-butyl-2,4- dihydroxy benzophenone) and/or a transition metal compound thereof of formula M-bis- [3,3<SP>1</SP> - methylene - bis - (5 - tert - butyl - 2,4- dihydroxy-benzophenone)] in which M is nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese or zinc. The stabilizer is preferably added in an amount of 0À1-1À0% by weight together with a phenolic antioxidant and optionally a sulphide antioxidant. Examples are given of the use of the benzophenone derivatives in the stabilization of polypropylene but it is stated that any polyolefin, e.g. homo- and co-polymers of ethylene; butene-1; pentene - 1; hexene - 1: 4 - methylpentene - 1: heptene-1; octene-1; 3,5-dimethyl-pentene-1; and 2,5-dimethylhexene-1 may be stabilized similarly.
