Abstract

1,166,912. Diphenyl acetylenes. J. R. GEIGY A.G. 20 Jan., 1967 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 3109/67. Heading C2C. Diphenyl acetylenes are prepared by dechlorination of 1,1 ,2,2-tetrachloro.1,2-diphenyl ethanes or α,#-dichlorostilbenes at 100-250‹ C. in an N-alkylated organic acid amide as solvent by treatment with zinc, alloys of zinc with metals of the 1st and 2nd sub-period of the Periodic System or a mixture of zinc and a zinc salt. Preferably the starting materials have one or more inorganic substituents, e.g. a halogen, in the nucleus. In the examples, zinc dust is used to convert (a) 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro - 1,2 - bis - (4<SP>1 </SP>- chlorophenyl) - ethane to bis - (4 - chlorophenyl) - acetylene; (b) 1,1,2,2- tetrachloro - 1,2 - bis - (3<SP>1 </SP>- chlorophenyl)- ethane to bis-(3-chlorophenyl)-acetylene; (c) 1,1,2,2 - tetrachloro - 1,2 - bis - (4<SP>1 </SP>- fluorophenyl) - acetylene; and (d) trans - α,# - 4,4<SP>1</SP>- tetrachlorostilbene to bis - (4 - chlorophenyl)- acetylene.
