[Also in Division C3] α-Halo-alcohols are produced by reduction of a compound of formula R 1 CXXCOCXHal R 2 , in which each of R 1 and R 2 in hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or fluorine or an alkyl or haloalkyl group, each X is hydrogen or Hal and Hal is chlorine, bromine or fluorine or of tetrachlorocyclopentadienone, at 10‹ to 90‹ C. with 1 to 10 moles based on the ketone, or formic acid and 0À3 to 10 moles, based on the ketone, of an aromatic or quasi-aromatic cyclic amine. The reducing agent may be used in the form of a formic acid-amine salt, and/or in the presence of a carboxylic acid anhydride optionally in admixture with a dicarboxylic acid or acid amide. Acyclic starting materials specified are di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexa-chloro-acetones, tri- and hexa-fluoro-acetones, and fluorochloroacetones.
