Abstract

1,166,234. Coating by extrusion. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1002/68. Heading B5A. An extrusion-coating apparatus has an adjustable die opening 90, Fig. 3, defined by fixed side members 86, 88, a vertically reciprocable transverse member 82 and substrate 30 which is pushed into contact with faces 94 of members 86, 88 by a vertically adjustable support block 46, and wherein the lower face of member 82 is concave to the substrate. Substrate 30 is pulled over block 46 and receives coating material within chamber 112, Fig. 2, delivered thereto from a hopper 10 having a vertically reciprocable plunger 22. Transverse die member 82 is carried by members 78, 72 coupled together and the latter is engaged by a threaded bolt 70 which effects reciprocation of assembly 72, 78, 82 when rotated. The substrate is guided laterally by a fixed block (128), Fig. 1 (not shown), and a recess (126) in a further block (120), see also Fig. 2, urged towards the die mechanism by a spring (124). The apparatus is primarily intended to provide a stripe of magnetic material of uniform cross-section on a tape, such cross-section changing from the modified rectangular shape of die opening 90 to rectangular when the coating is subsequently dried, e.g. in a hot air oven. Typical widths of the stripe are between # and 1 inch and a typical thickness is 0À5 mils. The radius of curvature of the lower surface of die member 82 is chosen depending on the viscosity of the coating material and the width of stripe required. Prior to drying of the coating, the particles of the magnetic material may be orientated by the application of an external magnetic field.
