Abstract
1,165,568. Protective arrangements. MECHANICAL PRODUCTS Inc. 6 Dec., 1966, No. 54629/66. Heading H2K. An overload protective system for an electronic load comprises a controlled switch and a control circuit having a time dependent characteristic for controlling the switch. The control circuit includes a current sensing device, a variable gain amplifier, and a threshold circuit effective to apply a signal to a switch control circuit. A generalized function circuit may effect full wave rectification or otherwise modify the output signal from the amplifier before its application to the threshold circuit. The switch control circuit includes an inhibiting arrangement to prevent, for approximately two cycles, operation of the system in response to transient conditions arising on the initial connection of the load. The switch control circuit, in addition to effecting the operation of the controlled switch, also controls the operation of a " generalized gain control function " circuit which, after a delay of 60 to 180 milliseconds imposed by a single shot multi-vibrator, renders the system more sensitive by increasing the gain of the amplifier. This increase in gain may be effected by lighting a lamp to change the resistance of a photoelectric cell in circuit with the amplifier. Should the lamp fail then the gain control circuit provides a signal which causes the switch control circuit to open the controlled switch. An " input on-off-reset control," e.g. a manually operable switch, may be used to control the opening and closing of the controlled switch. The whole system is formed by semi-conductor devices and is described in detail in the Specification with the aid of a circuit diagram, Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown).
