Abstract

1,164,324. Preparation of sebacic acid. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 23 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1966], No. 52603/66. Heading C2C. Sebacic acid is prepared by the oxidation of cyclodecanol or cyclodecanone or mixtures thereof, with nitric acid of concentration greater than 60% weight/weight at elevated temperatures in the presence of ammonium vanadate with a trace of copper powder as a catalyst. The cyclodecanol or cyclodecanone or mixture thereof, is added in small portions to the nitric acid solution such that a temperature rise of not more than 5‹ C. is produced, the oxidation of cyclodecanol preferably being effected at about 60‹ C. and that of cyclodecanone at about 80‹ C. When no further exothermic effect is observed, the oxidation may be advantageously completed by heating the reaction mixture for a short period at a higher temperature, e.g. 100‹ C. The sebacic acid may be isolated by cooling the reaction mixture whereupon the solid product crystallizes from solution. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,101,612.
