Abstract
1,163,681. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. April 10, 1968 [April 29, 1967], No.17195/68. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine with external ignition, as described comprising a housing having a two-lobed epitrochoidal inner surface 6, Fig. 1, within which planetary rotates a three-sided piston includes in its wall 1 a sparking-plug socket 2 having an internal thread 3 to receive a sparking-plug 4. A flame passage 5 extending from the socket and breaking through the surface 6 includes an insert 8 made from material housing substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the material of the housing and a good thermal conductivity and resistance to heat. Suitable materials are aluminium alloy for the housing and pure copper for the insert. The insert protects the housing from overheating and consequent damage. In another embodiment, the internal thread 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig.2, is extended through to the surface 6. This enables the insert 8 to be brought closer to the cooling water spaces 7 of the housing. If the housing is coated, e.g., with chromium, the socket mouth is coned with the coating extending into the coned mouth. The insert then includes a complementary coned fort which prevents the coating spalling off or exfoliating.
