C. engine of the kind comprising a piston 1, Figs. 1, 2, of trochoidal, preferably epitrochoidal, profile planetarily rotatable within a stationary housing 2 whose inner periphoral contour 5 is that of the outer envelope curve of the trochoid, includes in the housing at each corner between adjacent lobes a radial seal comprising a spring-loaded sealing strip 6 slidable in a slot in an insert 7 having a crosssection which is in part cylindrical and in part conforms to the outer envelope curve. The insert 7 has fully cylindrical ends which extend into recesses in the end walls 15 of the housing and serve as connecting elements between the radial seals and axial end seals between the housing end walls and the piston. To prevent rotation of the inserts they may be secured at their ends to the housing by screws 10 which may be hollow to permit the supply and discharge of coolant to ducts 8 in the inserts. If the coolant is lubricating oil it may be also supplied to lubricate the sealing strip 6 through ducts 13. Alternatively lubricant may be supplied to the strips through ducts 11, 12. To permit expansion and contraction of the strips through temperature changes, a hollow screw 10 or a bolt 14 may be fitted at one end only. The single hollow screws may then include both coolant supply and discharge passages.
