Abstract
1334477 Rotary-piston engines AUDI NSU AUTO UNION AG and WANKEL GmbH 4 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 20819/72 Heading F1F In a Wankel-type I. C. engine the housing has peripheral and end-wall portions 1, 3, 4 through which a liquid coolant is circulated (as indicated by arrowed broken-lines) by a centrifugal-pump impeller 6 in a cavity 5, the "cold arc" of the portion 1 adjacent an induction passage 30 being uncooled. At low operating temperatures a thermotically-controlled valve 21 is open, as shown in Fig. 2, so that a proportion of hot coolant in a cavity 19 returns to the cavity 5 directly through an opening 24 and passage 25, the remainder of said coolant returning indirectly through a radiator (not shown) and connections 22, 23 for the latter. When the normal operating temperature is reached the valve 21 closes and the whole of the coolant in the cavity 19 passes through the radiator. An opening 28 allows a proportion of coolant in a cavity 11 to by-pass cavities 13, 17 so that a smaller quantity of coolant flows through these cavities than cavities 9 in the hottest region of the portion 1.
