Abstract

1,163,548. Electron beam deflecting apparatus. SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc. 24 Oc t ., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 47608/66. Heading HID. A magnetic scanning coil deflection system, e.g. for a cathode ray tube, comprises at least one pair of coils having longitudinal segments and provided with forward transverse, cross-over segments 34b, 36b which are distributed in a longitudinal direction over an outwardly flared portion 22 of a former 10 so as to produce a curved magnetic field whose flux lines bow outwardly and are generally perpendicular to the electron beam as it is deflected. A second pair of coils is similarly provided on a second former 12 and the system has a ferrite jacket 14 with a flared and protruding forward end 90 and also a protruding rear end 92. A non-magnetic spacer 70 is fitted between the ferrite jacket and the former 12. The coils are rectangular spirals with the longitudinal segments distributed in slots in the formers 10, 12 in accordance with a sine function modified to compensate for the longitudinal distribution of the cross-over segments. The coils may be formed as etched thin films bonded to the formers. The flared portion of the system may be extended back to constitute the major or entire portion of the system.
