Abstract
1,163,228. Valves. LINDE A.G. 28 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 44156/67. Heading F2V. Sealing between the valve closure member and valve body in either a butterfly valve, Fig. 2, or a sluice valve (Fig. 7, not shown) is effected by means of a hollow sealing ring 5 having disposed therein a helical spring 27 and being connectible to a supply of pressure. In the case of the butterfly valve, the sealing ring 5 which can be of circular or U-shaped section, is located in a groove formed in the housing 1, and is automatically connectible to the pressure source by means of a lug 16 depending from a piston rod 24 forming part of a valve actuator 14, which lug engages a plunger 17 subsequent to the valve reaching its closed position and releases same prior to the valve being opened, the plunger serving to actuate valves 18, 19, 20 which supply pressure to, and relieve pressure from the sealing ring respectively. A half-ring (26, Figs. 1 and 3, not shown), having a wedge-shaped profile, is located on the upstream side of the valve and serves to protect the sealing face of the closure member when the latter is disposed in its open position. In the case of the sluice valve, a groove formed in one side of a slot (47) into which the closure member (45) is movable, houses the sealing ring (5), the pressure within which is controllable in a manner similar to that above.
