Abstract

1,162,807. Friction-type shock-absorbers. O. E. PETER. 19 Dec., 1966, No. 56836/66. Heading F2S. A friction-type shock absorber comprises a frusto-conical shaped piston 2 which is carried, with radial clearance, on a shock transmitting- member, e.g. a bolt 6 between a bolt head 7 and a locking ring 8, and which works in a correspondingly conical inner surface of a cylinder 1. As applied to a safety belt for an automobile a pin 5 on a closure disc 4 secured to the cylinder 1 by a locking ring 9 is fixed to the vehicle body and the outer end of the bolt 6, which extends through a closure end plate 3, is fixed to the safety belt, not shown. Tensile stress on the bolt, due e.g. to a collision, causes the piston 2 to move in the conical bore of the cylinder 1 in the direction of the arrow, the cylinder being expanded with its elastic limit and the piston being radially compressed. The shock absorber is re-set by forcing the piston 2 back into its original position. The piston 2 and cylinder 1 are preferably made of an aluminium alloy with a hard metal coating on their contact surfaces and the piston 2 can be slit, or slotted axially.
