1441672 Bumpers SACHSENRING AUTOMOBILWERKE ZWICKAU VEB 25 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 03493/74 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A bumper device for vehicles comprises ram 2 fixable to a vehicle body 1, peripheral beads 3, 4 on the ram, a sleeve 9 of elastomeric material surrounding the ram 2 and having grooves 7, 8 into which the beads 3, 4 penetrate to secure the sleeve axially and free of deformation, a bumper bar 19 secured to the sleeve 9, a closed absorption chamber 10 formed between the ram head 6 and the sleeve 9 which chamber 10 communicates with an overpressure chamber 12 and a compression spring 14 braced against the head 5 and the end wall 16 of the chamber 12, the arrangement being such that on impact on the bumper 19, the ram head 6 penetrates and deforms the sleeve, Fig. 2 (not shown), compressing air and the spring in the chamber until the head 6 abuts an annular shoulder 11. The spring and compressed air return the sleeve and bumper to the normal position shown. The end of the sleeve facing the vehicle body engages and grips a cover 20 to prevent accidental withdrawal of the sleeve from the ram.
