Abstract

1,162,630. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 23 Aug., 1966, No. 20421/69. Divided out of 1,161,203. Heading F2E. In a spot-type disc brake of the kind having inner and outer pistons working in a common bore in a stationary member at one side of the disc and acting respectively on a directly-operated pad, engageable with the same side of the disc, and a yoke, which surrounds the stationary member and a portion of the disc and applies another pad to the opposite side of the disc, there is provided between a mechanical actuator and the directly-operated pad an axially movable intermediate assembly of which the effective length is adjustable automatically to compensate for wear of the friction pads when the brake is applied hydraulically after wear of the pads has taken place, the intermediate assembly comprising a stem which engages the back plate of the directly-operated pad. As shown, the stem 55, which is secured to the backing plate of the directly-operated pad by means not shown, is in threaded engagement with a sleeve 58 which in turn is acted on through a dolly 44 by a manually-operated cam 43 journalled in the outer piston 53, the sleeve 58 being slidable in a sleeve member 61 which is screwed into the piston 53 and carries a spring-loaded, pivoted pawl 64 with which is associated a pressing 63 having bent-out lugs 67 for engagement with an annular internal shoulder of the inner piston 51. Upon hydraulic application of the brake the two pistons move apart, causing pawl 64 to be rocked and, through its engagement with ratchet teeth 66 on the sleeve 58, to rotate the latter to take up any wear of the pads.
