Abstract

1,232,259. Hydraulic disc-brake slack-adjusters. ALFRED TEVES G.m.b.H. 17 Oct., 1968 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 49363/68. Headings F2E and F2F. An hydraulic disc brake with preferably two piston and cylinder actuators has slack adjusting means for each piston 8 comprising a screwthreaded spindle 3 or 12 so mounted on an end wall of the cylinder 17 as to be lockable against unwanted rotation, a threaded nut 7 mounted on the spindle and having at its end near the piston a flange with a coned periphery b, a corresponding coned surface a within the piston 8, a ball bearing assembly 5, 6, encircling the nut 7, and a retaining ring 4 fixed within the piston at a distance from the piston face related to the clearance of the brake when released; the balls 6 are in contact with the face of the flange remote from the piston. In operation, hydraulic fluid under pressure is applied to inlets c, whereupon brake linings 10 are forced into contact with brake disc e. If the length of the piston stroke exceeds the normal clearance, the ring 4 presses against the ball race 5 and by means of the ball bearing assembly forces the nut 7 to rotate. A manual actuating lever 19 is provided on the right of Fig. 1. When this is pivoted to press the adjacent spindle ended for brake actuation, the respective coned surfaces a, b are forced together so that the nut 7 is prevented from rotating. For both manners of actuation, the spindle 3 or 12 is prevented from rotating by a bearing disc 11, the surface of which may be toothed to increase its effectiveness. On the left a cup spring 2 is provided, while on the right a helical spring 15 in a flanged member 16 forces bearing disc 11 against the cylinder end. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a cup spring is located between the retaining ring 4 and the ball race 5. The outer end d of each spindle 3, 12 is slotted or shaped for engagement by a screw-driver or like tool to effect rotation when the brake pads need replacing.
