Abstract

1,162,410. Coating by vapour deposition. JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORP. Nov. 22, 1967 [Nov.23, 1966], No.53259/67. Heading C7F. Entrainment of liquid metal in metal vapour evaporated from a heated crucible 12 is minimized by incorporating in the crucible 12 vertical projections 6 extending upwards from its floor, the projections and the crucible being of a material which conducts heat but is not wetted by liquid metal contained in the crucible during evaporation. In use gaps 8 are present between the molten metal and the walls of the crucible, and between the molten metal and the projections 6. Metal vapour bubbles 7 originating on the crucible floor are likely to reach the surface of the metal at a gap 8 rather than at the small area of upper surface 13, whereas without the projections 6 they would rise to the surface 13 through the full depth of the molten metal, growing on the way and eventually bursting at the surface and causing splashing. The metal evaporated may be Zn, and be deposited on a moving strip 2. Both crucible 12 and the projections 6 may be of graphite.
