Abstract

[Also in Division G4] Apparatus for measuring both the speed and the number of revolutions of a shaft includes a bi-stable switching circuit controlled by pulses transmitted as the shaft rotates, the bi-stable circuit being connected to (1) an output transformer having oppositely wound primary windings P1, P2 Fig.1 and secondary windings S1 S2 connected by a full wave rectifier to a meter to indicate the speed of rotation and (2) the windings L m of a stepping motor giving an indication of the number of revolutions of the shaft. The bi-stable circuit may comprise a pair of transistors T1, T2 controlled by the output from a pick-up head on for example the propeller shaft of a vehicle or a pair of reed switches or a two way reed switch actuated directly by a machine driven rotor or wheel.
