A photographic element comprises a support carrying a hydrophilic colloid layer containing at least one mordant compound of the formula:- where n and g are each 0 and 1; m is 1 or 2; R is alkyl or alkoxy of up to 5 carbons, aryl or substituted aryl, aryloxy or aralkyl; R1 and R3 are each hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl or aryl or substituted aryl; R2 is alkyl or substituted alkyl or aryl or substituted aryl, or when n and g are 0, R1 and R2 may together represent a group of the formula;- where j is 2 or 3 and R0 is hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl or aryl or substituted aryl; when m is 2, A is a bi-functional group of molecular weight less than 150 in which each functional group is a nitrogen atom of valency 3 or 5 having no hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen, and when the nitrogen atoms have valency 5 one of the groups attached thereto is an acid anion; and when m is 1, A is a substituted nitrogen of valency 3 or 5, none of the substituents being hydrogen but one being an acid anion when the nitrogen has a valency of 5, the said group A having a molecular weight of less than 300; or a salt of such a mordant compound. The mordant compound is an 'alkali-release' mordant which loses its mordant property on treatment with alkaline solution. The layers containing the mordant compound may contain a water-soluble acid dye and may then comprise a filter, ultraviolet-absorbing or antihalation layer in a lightsensitive silver halide element or the layer may itself be the silver halide emulsion layer, the dye being readily discharged when the element is processed in alkaline processing solution. The photographic element containing the mordant may comprise an inbibition dye transfer blank.
