Abstract
1454452 Binderless photographic silver halide dispersions EASTMAN KODAK CO 8 Aug 1974 [14 Aug 1973] 35028/74 Heading G2C Binderless dispersions of photo-sensitive silver halide grains are made by (i) adding to a photographic gelatino silver halide emulsion a peptizing amount of at least one dye of the formula:- where A is -N= or a group R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, any of which may be substituted, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are each H 1 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, any of which may be substituted, Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>2</SP> each complete a heterocyclic nucleus having 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring containing the nitrogen atom shown, n is O, 1 or 2 and X is an anion, or the anhydro form of such a dye, (ii) hydrolyzing the gelatin of the emulsion using at least one proteolytic enzyme, (iii) separating the silver halide grains and their absorbed dye from the liquid hydrolyzed emulsion and (iv) redispersing said grains in a substantially binderless liquid medium. The dispersion may be coated on to a support to form a binderless photographic material. The dye of the above formula acts as a peptizing agent preventing agglomeration of the silver halide grains when the gelatin is hydrolyzed and may also colour and spectrally sensitize the grains. The dye may be removed from the silver halide system by treatment with dilute mineral acid.
