1,161,020. Jointing by stamping and forging; upsetting; welding by pressure. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 Dec., 1967 [17 Dec., 1966], No. 56790/67. Headings B3H, B3Q and B3R. [Also in Division H2] A method of effecting a vacuum-tight sealing of a through connection formed by a metal wire 3 passed through a metal tube 2 comprises constricting the tube 2, Fig. 2, to grip the wire which is subsequently upset, Fig. 3, into intimate engagement with the inner wall of an end portion of the tube adjacent the constriction and so that at the end of the tube the wire is thickened beyond the initial inner diameter of the tube. The tube is cold-welded to the wire. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a pair of jaws 4 for constricting the tube and providing a recess to limit the upsetting operation performed by endwise movement of a second pair of jaws 5 gripping the wire. The tube may be of nickel-plated Ni-Fe sealed or soldered in a glass or ceramic body 1, and the wire of silver-plated copper.
