Abstract
1,160,984. Purifying copper. PHELPS DODGE CORP. Aug.10, 1966 [Aug.10, 1965], No.35899/66. Heading C7D. Copper is purified by treating it in a hydrogen atmosphere to dissolve H 2 therein in an amount sufficient to reduce the oxygen present and provide a dissolved excess which will cause effervescence of the molten copper during the subsequent reduced pressure treatment. The copper (e.g. electrolytically refined copper) is preferably heated in H 2 but may be heated and melted in an inert gas prior to the hydrogen treatment. A suitable apparatus for performing the vacuum treating step of the process is described in Specification 1, 160, 985.
