Abstract
Silver is purified which contains copper as a significant impurity. In this process the electrolyte contaminated with copper is drawn off from the electrolytic silver purification cell and treated with an immiscible liquid phase which contains a selective complexing agent for copper ions. As a result, copper is removed from this electrolyte without the silver first having been removed. The electrolyte which after this treatment has a reduced copper content can again be used in the electrolysis for the purification of silver. It is possible to carry out continuously this process of drawing off, treatment and returning, so that the silver electrolysis takes place from an electrolyte which has an essentially constant copper content.
