Abstract

1,160,727. Extruding. LOEWY ROBERTSON ENG. CO. Ltd. 22 Nov., 1967 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 55342/66. Heading B3P. A metal extrusion press has a rotary diecarrier 24 which is clamped in position by a pair of independently actuated jaws 44, 48 acting on opposite sides of the carrier. Upper jaw 44 is actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 54 and engages an insert 46 on the carrier. Lower jaw 48 is wedge shaped and is actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 56 to engage a pair of spaced inserts 50 on the carrier. The jaws are moved into their clamping position to support the carrier 24 whilst the discard is sheared off by a shear blade 38 actuated by an hydraulic ram. The billet container (30), Fig. 2 (not shown), is retracted by push rods 34 to provide access for the shear blade. The jaws may also support the die carrier during extrusion and may have adjustment nuts (166), Fig. 3 (not shown) for aligning the die with the extrusion axis; alternatively shims may be used between the inserts and the die carrier. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the lower jaw, and its cylinder are vertically aligned with the upper jaw. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) both the upper and lower jaws are wedge shaped.
