[Also in Division C7] A printing process comprising providing an electrically insulating coating layer on an electrically continuous conductive base, eliminating the coating layer in accordance with an image to be reproduced so as to expose the electrically conductive base, depositing or forming a material upon the exposed area of the base by electrolysis with the base connected as an electrode and then transferring the material so deposited or formed onto a transfer material, e.g. by pressure. The insulating layer may be (i) a photo-sensitive polymer layer which is exposed to a light image and developed, (ii) a pressure-sensitive releasable layer which is selectively removed by writing pressure applied through an adhesive sheet material (iii) a heatsensitive releasable layer which is transferred to a transfer material in contact therewith at an area heated to the softening temperature of the layer or (iv) a material which may be decomposed and evaporated selectively by heat caused by the absorption of high intensity light (e.g. laser light). The conductive layer may be metal or a base (e.g. paper or plastics material) coated with a material containing carbon block or a finely-divided metal powder dispersed in a binder. The image area may be provided with a release layer, e.g. polysiloxane or silicone oil to ease transfer of the deposited or formed material. Transfer to the transfer material may be by pressure. Examples of suitable insulating and conducting materials and of electrolyte compositions are given.
