Abstract

1,160,195. Lubricating. C. VOGEL, [trading as WILLY VOGEL]. 14 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 12454/68. Heading F2A. An engine sump 11, Fig. 1, supplies lubricant to an internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle and is replenished with lubricant from a replenishing tank 21. The sump 11 is provided with a level maintaining pipe 13 which is connected to a pump 18 by means of a pipe 14 and a valve 15. The tank 21 is connected to the pump 18 by means of a pipe 22 and a valve 23. The pump 18 is actuated periodically by means of a piston 37 of a compressed-air cylinder 36, the piston 37 and the piston of the pump 18 having a common piston-rod 28. In use, at periodic intervals when the vehicle has travelled pre-determined distances, the piston 37 is moved to the left by means of compressed-air which is supplied by a pipe 39, via an electrically-actuated air-valve 40. The movement of the piston of the pump 18 to the left causes a portion of the lubricant which has been supplied to the pump from the tank 21, via the pipe 22 and the valve 23, to be returned to the sump, via a valve 31 and a pipe 30; the other portion of the lubricant being forced to distributers 34, 35 of the central lubricating system, via a pipe 33. Both the piston and the cylinder of the pump 18 are stepped so as to effect the required differential pressures of oil. As the lubricant is being forced from one side of the piston, lubricant is also being received at the other side of the piston, the lubricant being pumped from the sump 11, via the pipe 14 and the valve 15. At a pre-determined pressure a lubricant pressure switch 51 closes; the air-valve 40 is returned by a spring (not shown); the piston 37 is moved to the right by means of compressed-air supplied via a pipe 38; and lubricant, which was drawn into the pump from the sump 11, is forced into the tank 21, via a valve 20 and a pipe 19. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the reciprocating pump, Fig. 1, is replaced by a pair of rotary pumps and a floatcontrolled tank is provided intermediate the replenishing tank and the pumps.
