In a piezo-electric generator, the element 20, Fig. 1, is struck by a spring-loaded hammer 38 sliding in a tubular push-rod 36 which is manually pressed by button 48 towards the element, this action loading the spring 46 which energizes the hammer, and finally releasing a catch 58 to allow the hammer to strike. As shown in Fig. 1, the push-rod 36 moves with respect to the housing 10 of the unit. But in the modification shown in Fig. 4, an intermediate sleeve 80 is drawn rearwardly to charge the spring and release the catch while the pushrod 36<SP>1</SP> remains fixed to the body 10<SP>1</SP>. Thus, as the button 48<SP>1</SP> is pressed, the whole unit moves forward, moving the " hot " lead 16<SP>1</SP> into the ignition area as shown dotted. It retracts when the button is released.
