Abstract
1,159,460. Generators operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 26 Jan., 1968 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 55285/66. Heading H2A. The walls and/or electrodes of an MHD generator are at least partially formed of a permeable membrane 12 through which cool gas or liquid is passed into the duct and are supported at the face of the duct by metallic holders 10 which have cooling ducts 20, the holders being insulated by strips 11 The elements 12 may be square section in a wall construction or elongated strip in an electrode construction and are made of ceramic, e.g. zirconia, magnesia or alumina, or of refractory metal, e.g. tungsten or tantalum, or sintered metal, e.g. stainless steel. The pore size is 10-50 microns and the element is up to 1 cm. thick and the ceramic elements may include reinforcing carbon or refractory metal fibres. The gas or liquid may be air, a combination mixture, a carbonaceous gas or a reducing agent.
