Abstract
1367389 Electro-chemical analysis ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 30 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 14958/72 Heading G1N A solid-electrolyte cell to screw through the wall of an I.C. engine exhaust pipe to determine oxygen in the exhaust gases is provided with a temperature controlled electric heater, and comprises a screwed steel cap 1 holding an insulator 3 e.g. of ceramic on which the cell 10 is mounted, and a perforated sheet steel protection cover 13. A Pt/PtRh temperature sensor 9 is attached to the base of the cell, and a rigid heating coil 5 surrounds the cell. A metal/metal oxide reference source 11 is contacted by an electrode 6. The reference mixture may be Ni/NiO; Cu/ Cu 2 O; Co/CoO; Fe 3 O 4 /Fe 2 O 3 or FeO/Fe 3 O 4 . The solid electrolyte may be stabilized zirconia or thoria, or mullite (3Al 2 O 3 .2SiO 2 ). The outer electrode may be platinum or tungsten carbide, or high-temperature resistant oxides such as Fe 3 O 4 . The thermocouple controls the heater through a transistor switching circuit Fig.2 (not shown).
