[Also in Division B8] In a baling press having means for holding the material to be baled in a compressed condition, and means for feeding a strap S and guiding it a predetermined number of times round the material, the free end of the strap is guided under an adjacent convolution so that when the pressure is released the expansion of the bale holds the strap end against the previous convolution. The strap may be of metal or plastics. Fig. 4 shows one embodiment in which the strap S is fed by rollers 7 through guide channels 8 formed in four press plates 1-4. The plate 4 is fixed and the plates 1-3 movable. Instead of an oval shape as in Fig. 4, the convolutions defined by the channels may be circular, or square or oblong with rounded corners. After a predetermined length of strapping has been fed the feed rollers 7 are reversed to tighten the strap, and at a given torque the rollers are stopped and the strap cut by a shear 10. More than one strap feeding mechanism may be used for each bale, and a minimum of three turns of strapping usually applied by each. Low density bales (B) are fed to the apparatus by a pneumatic cylinder assembly (A), Figs. 1, 3 (not shown) and removed by a gravity conveyer (D).
