Abstract

1,159,156. Waveguide magic-T junctions. MICROWAVE ASSOCIATES Inc. 4 Oct., 1966 [6 June, 1966], No. 44367/66. Heading H1W. The E-plane arm of a folded magic-T junction is matched to the junction by means of symmetrically arranged inductive posts. The magic-T is of the " folded " type, i.e. the symmetrical arms 15, 16 lie parallel or at a small angle to each other. In the example shown, both the symmetrical arms 15, 16 and the H-arm 10 consist of waveguides of half the normal narrow dimension, the E-arm 11 having normal dimensions. Matching posts 26-29 for the E-arm lie on a locus of constant radius which may, in one example, be equal to the wide dimension a of the waveguides and may be centred at the point where the common wall 25 intersects the plane containing the nearer narrow wall of the E-arm 11. Alternatively, the radius may exceed a and be centred at a point on the common wall 25 such that 0.925 of the radius lies beyond the end of the common wall. In the example shown, posts 26, 27 lie on the centre-lines of arms 15, 16 and posts 28, 29 in a plane bisecting the broad walls of the E-arm 11. The H-arm 10 is matched to the junction by adjusting the distance d (as shown, d #a/2). Any other known means of matching the arms to the junction may be used; buttons, posts, irises are shown in drawings illustrating the prior art. The invention may also be applied to folded junctions of the type in which the H-arm lies on the same axis as the E-arm, the cross-sections of the two arms being orthogonal to each other.
