Abstract

1,158,903. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 18 Aug., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 38833/65. Heading F2E. A floating-caliper disc brake comprises pads 10, 11 secured respectively to a pivoted body member 14 and to a yoke 15 which surrounds the body member and the pads together with a portion of the disc 12, the yoke being slidably guided on the body member and having an inwardly directed portion 24 which engages a piston 22 fitted sealingly in a blind bore 21 of the body member so as to form a cylinder 20 to which fluid is supplied to apply the pads to the disc. Body member 14 is pivoted, on an axis 18 which is perpendicular to the brake axis 13 and located between the latter and the pad 10, by a pair of ball joints 16 each constituted by a ball member 30 secured to a lug 32 of the body member and engaging a socket which is assembled between a fixed support 17 and a cover-plate 33. The backing plate 38 of pad 10 is located in a radially directed groove 37 in face 19 of the body member and held in place by a peg (not shown), or alternatively in a circular recess in the face 19.
