1,158,539. Ethylene-N-vinyl amide copolymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 4 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967; 13 Nov., 1967], No. 26437/68. Heading C3P. Copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing 5 to 95 weight per cent ethylene, 5 to 95 weight per cent one or more secondary N- vinyl carboxylic acid amides and 0 to 50 weight per cent one or more additional olefinically unsaturated monomers in bulk, solution or suspension at 20 to 250‹ C. and 20 to 2500 atmospheres with the aid of an azodicarboxylic acid, dinitrile or diester. Preferred amides are N-vinyl formamide, acetamide and pivalylamide, and optional comonomers specified include vinyl carboxylates, acrylic and methacrylic esters, maleic anhydride and esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, vinyl ethers and vinyl heterocyclic compounds. A preferred medium is t. butanol, optionally admixed with water, and one monomer may be added continuously during the reaction. The reaction may be stopped, e.g. by adding crotonaldehyde, or may be effected continuously. The products are useful for coating, laminating and moulding, and may be cross-linked, e.g. with polyisocyanates. Examples describe the copolymerization in t.butanol in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile of ethylene with (1-13 and 32) N-vinyl acetamide, (14-17) N-vinyl butyramide, (18, 19 and 33) N-vinyl formamide, (20-24) N-vinyl pivalyl amide, (25-30) N- vinyl acetamide and vinyl acetate, (31) N- vinyl acetamide and vinyl chloride, and for comparison N-vinyl N-methyl acetamide.
