Abstract

1,158,245. Making rivets; extruding; attaching handles. E. C. FRAZE. 1 March, 1968, No. 9992/68. Headings B3A, B3P and B3U. [Also in Division B8] A rivet 18a is formed integral with a sheet 14a by squeezing an annular zone of the sheet between dies 22, 24 to cause the material to flow radially inwards. A protrusion 28 is provided on the lower die so that the sheet is clamped outside the squeezed zone. The amount of material extruded may be such that when the rivet is deformed by a punch 152 to secure, for example, a tear-tab 120 of a can to the can end 110 the rivet is substantially solid (130), Fig. 18 (not shown). The sheet is formed with a reduced thickness portion by the dies and this portion is formed with a tear line 20 between a pair of dies (36), (38), Fig. 3a (not shown). The reduced thickness portion may be formed by an indention on either side of the sheet to define a recess 64 into which the stepped end 70 of the tab 66 seats. The rivet is supported internally by a die 74 during setting when the end wall is extruded outwards by opposed dies 75, 74 to form a bead (18), Fig. 11 (not shown). If the rivet is to be solid when set the rivet is not supported internally during setting, but the lower die 150 may have a conical projection which does not extend through the opening in the tab. The sheet and tear tab are preferably aluminium.
