Abstract
1347737 Making cam ends E C FRAZE 14 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 57969/71 Headings B3A B3J and B3Q [Also in Division B8] A method of forming an easy-opening can end 11 comprises coining the end wall 16 of the can end to form shoulders and/or beads immediately adjacent to and on opposite sides of a scoreline 21 defining only a partially removable tear-out portion 15 in order to protect a consumer from injury on the edge of both the tear-out portion and the opening formed. In the embodiment shown, the end wall is coined between a die 41, having inner and outer recesses 45 and 43, and a coining tool 47 to form an inwardly offset tear-out-forming portion 15a and an intermediate offset thinned ledge 27. The line 21 is then scored in the ledge between the offsetting shoulders 35 and 37 by means of a scoring tool 57 and punch 59, the latter acting to stretch the offsetting shoulder 37 on scoring. The shoulders 35 and 37 are formed close to the scoreline, i.e. 0À015 inch, and act as guards for the edges formed on rupture of the scoreline. The thickness of the thinned ledge is 0À008 inch when using a can end stock thickness of 0À0135 inch and the scoreline penetrates to a depth of approximately half the ledge thickness. The scoreline terminates in oppositely and outwardly curved ends 23 to prevent complete detachment of the tear-out portion from the can end. A pull tab 19 is secured to the tear-out portion by an integral rivet 17, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the end wall at the base of the rivet is coplanar with, and of the same thickness as, the ledge to permit continuity of the scoreline. In other embodiments, Figs. 7-9, Fig. 10; Figs. 11 and 12, and Figs. 13-14, the guard arrangements are formed by ribs 141 and 143, or 241 and 243, or 341 and 343 coined in the can end on either side of the scoreline. In another embodiment, Figs. 15 and 16 (not shown), an offsetting portion 437 of an inwardly coined tear-out portion and a bead 441 extending outwardly of and around the scoreline 423 provide guard arrangements for the subsequently formed edges when the tear portion is removed.
