A vehicle may be washed by a relatively movable stainless steel, plastics, or lined metal spray apparatus carried for example by a carriage 2 movable on tracks 6 and supporting an L-shaped spray arm 3 connected to a supply of hot soft water and detergent at a pressure of 400 to 600 p.s.i. After a predetermined cycle, the detergent and hot water is shut off and cold soft rinse water is directed by high velocity sprays over the vehicle. Whilst the vehicle is still wet and before drying takes place, deionized or demineralized water of a pH value of less than 7 and at low velocity is sprayed from a deionizer on to the vehicle to prevent spots and streaks thereon. The deionizer 21 contains a mixture of ion exchange resins such as polystyrene, polysulphonates, cross-linked carboxylic resins or the like, whereby the container has cation and anion material therein so that when the water flows therethrough the ions are removed. The deionizer must be regenerated periodically by separating the anion and cation materials and treating them with acid and caustic materials respectively.
