Abstract

A check valve comprises a resilient conical closure member 61 carried by a sleeve 64 attached by bolt 63 to a hub 54 suspended by webs 52. In the relaxed position shown, the periphery 73 of the closure member engages the wall of passage 74 whilst face 66 is spaced from the downstream edges of webs 52. During normal flow, two or more ribs 68, 69 allow portions of the closure member to collapse, whilst when reverse flow takes place the closure member is forced into contact with the webs, thereby causing the periphery 73 to wipe the wall of the passage to remove any foreign bodies. In alternative embodiments, the ribs 68, 69 are replaced by grooves, local reinforcement or support plates fast with the closure member or the housing. The periphery of the closure member may engage a conical seat and the closure member may move axially relative to such seat against the action of a spring. Webs may also be provided on the downstream side of the closure member to support the latter in the open position. The above-mentioned wiping of the seat may also be achieved by providing an annular groove or recess in the closure member or by forming the latter with a curved conical configuration.
