In an axial piston pump or motor the rotor 6 is supported at each end on self aligning bearings 4 and has a spherical surface supported on a complementary spherical surface on the body member 1. One of the spherical surfaces is formed on a member 30 which is non-rotatably mounted on the body (as shown) or on the rotor. The spherical surfaces from the rotary valve and the member 30 has pressure balancing grooves 31, 32, 33.
