[Also in Division A3] In a built up rubber shoe heel comprising a hard shank faced with a relatively soft tread, the tread and shank are simultaneously moulded and pre-vulcanized in a single mould assembly wherein the tread mould cavity 2 is defined between a bottom mould part 1 and the underside of a removable parting plate 12, the upper side whereof co-operates with an apertured central mould part 5 and an upper mould part 6 to define the shank mould cavity 10 and which plate 12 is removable, either by sliding out of the separated mould parts 1, 5 or by opening thereof, so that the mould parts 1 and 5 lie in abutment and the shank and tread are then joined by completing the vulcanization thereof in contact. An adhesive may be applied to the joining faces of the pre-vulcanized tread and shank and the plate 12 may also be provided on one or both faces thereof with a desired pattern e.g. linearly extending ribs and grooves, to provide an improved joint between the moulded parts. The pattern may extend over the entire plate 12 or only over the area of the cavity disposed there against and may taper in depth towards the edges of the cavities. Alternatively both sides of the plate 12 may be provided with a recess and whereby after removing the plate 12 a greater moulding pressure is obtained at the centre than at the edges of the cavities. Compression springs 9 may be fitted between mould parts 5 and 1 and the assembly is aligned by dowels and recesses 8, 7 and 4, 3 between the mould parts. Flash channels 13, 14 may also be provided.
