Abstract

1,156,416. Selective hydrogenation. SIGNAL OIL & GAS CO. 27 Sept., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 43034/66. Heading C5E. Butadiene and/or ethyl acetylene contained in a C 4 -hydrocarbon stream are selectively hydrogenated to mono-olefins, without any hydrogenation of mono-olefins in the stream, by a process comprising contacting the stream and hydrogen in the vapour state at 300-550‹ F. with pre-sulphided high nickel content catalyst disposed on a refractory base in the presence of at least one grain of mercaptan per 100 SCF of the stream and in the substantial absence of inorganic sulphur-bearing nickel catalyst poisons. The process of the invention reduces the sulphuric acid requirement of the stream during subsequent alkylation by removing acid polymerizable material. The nickel sulphide content of the catalyst is preferably at least 18% by weight and the refractory base may comprise alumina and/or silica.
