[Also in Division C6] A barrel, e.g. for storing and ageing whisky, is made from oak &c. staves 6, which have raised and depressed areas alternating over at least part of their inner surface. These areas may be formed by corrugations. The staves are internally charred to form charred and red caramel layers. The outer surface of the barrel may also have alternating raised and depressed areas. The alternating raised and depressed areas may also take other forms, e.g. castellations.
