Abstract

1,155,931. Firearms; projectile containers. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON - HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 5 Dec., 1966 [15 Dec., 1965], No. 54260/66. Headings F3A and F3C. A portable firearm comprises a projectile P having a propelling charge which accompanies the projectile on the firing thereof in a launching tube A supported by a support B, a grip for holding the firearm, a periscopic sight C and a firing device (D, Figs. 3 and 6, not shown). The tube A is of the recoilless type and is pivoted on the support B and held perpendicularly thereto by a foldable stay 7, 8 which comprises two U-shaped members 7, 8 and which cooperates with an abutment 13 in the tube A. The lower end of the stay 7, 8 slides in two slots 10 in the support, the upper end of the slots being inclined to the axis of the support B to hold the lower end in its tube holding position. The periscopic sight C is constituted by an eye-piece 17 in a mount 15 frictionally held on a hollow shoulder 16, a plane mirror 18, a preferably convex mirror 19 carried by the member 7 and a transparent, pivotally mounted flap 20. The grip comprises two pairs of hinged flaps 4, 6 which in their closed position, as shown, form the grip but when opened outwardly form a cradle for the tube A when in its folded away position (Fig. 8, not shown). The firing mechanism includes a lever or trigger 24 pivoted on one of the flaps 4, which trigger is connected by a cable to a cam. Rotation of the cam depresses through a co-operating member an arm against a spring such that on release of the arm by the cam, the arm is urged upwardly to strike a percussion element which in turn fires the projectile P housed in the tube A. The tube may be very light and be composed of sheet metal, light alloy, plastics material, cardboard or fibre glass. In the folded position of the firearm the tube A may be used as a container for the mount 15 as well as for a projectile.
